Editor's note: Last Erev Shabbos we posted Rabbi Asher Deren's weekly Parsha article, which is always timely and fascinating. In that article he related how Arthur, 102 years old, put on T'fillin for the very first time. Here is the amazing sequel to that story of hashgocho protis.
Dear Friends,
From the many replies I received to last week's email, I could see that you were as touched as I was by my meeting with Arthur, a 102 year old Yid living in Hermanus who put on Tefilin this past Tuesday for the first time in his life.
Yesterday I received the news that just moments before Shabbos, Arthur passed away peacefully in his sleep, only a few months short of his 103rd Birthday.
With the good assistance of Major General Louis Coetzee, Mr. Morris Kushner with the UOS Chevra Kadisha, and Mr. Freddy Hirsch, Arthur's body is presently being brought back to Cape Town so he can receive Kvurat Yisrael, a dignified Jewish burial.
The funeral will be held at the Pinelands Cemetery at 11:30 am tomorrow, Tuesday morning. As Arthur does not have any family in Cape Town, If there is any way that you could participate in this "Chesed Shel Emes" -"True Kindness" to the "Meis Mitzvah" - "Mitzvah for the Deceased" and come to help make a Minyan, you would be participating in a truly noble deed.
Please RSVP to me if you will be able to make it so we can confirm that we have the necessary Minyan so that Kaddish can be recited.
Respectfully yours,
Rabbi Asher Deren
