Merkos Shlichus:
The Last Jews on the Island
Freeport, Bahamas, is an island with a population of 27,000, of which only 50 are Jews. Upon arrival, we discovered that almost all of the Jews leave the island during the hot summer months, and there are only 9 Jews who stay throughout the summer. We immediately started making phone calls, but to no avail. We just couldn't find them. Finally, after a long day of endless searching, we got in touch with one couple, Tony and Julie, who assured us that they were the only Jews left on the island ■ more

At one fabrengen in 5733, Moshiach’s father asked the Rebbe for a blessing — for Moshiach.
“Where is Moshiach,” the Rebbe called out, with a sly twinkle. You should have seen everyone’s face, recalls Moshiach ■ more

The Hakafah was of course, a lively one with the Rebbe leading on all of those assembled with the motions of his holy arms, body and soul. At the conclusion of this Hakafah when the Torahs were being returned to the ark in preparation for the next Hakafah, the Rebbe’s eyes made contact with eyes of Rabbi J.J. and when doing so suddenly the Rebbe gestured with his hand ■ more

“I wasn’t at his fight,” says Zalman Liberov, a rabbi at Brooklyn’s Chabad of Flatbush whom Salita credits with bringing him to Judaism after his mother died when he was a teenager. “But I called him 10 minutes afterwards and told him, ‘Dmitriy, now begins the real fight. The real fight is how to deal with what happens next ■ more

 Practicing What You Preach
But while putting these words on paper to guide federal prosecutors is important, the Department of Justice ultimately is to be judged on whether it follows in deeds. Unfortunately, right now the Obama administration is missing a golden opportunity in Iowa to show it supports parity for all ■ more

The Rebbe's Army

Wearing the same uniforms, and usually sporting similar haircuts, one might be equally hard pressed to see many differences among American soldiers of the same rank. But they are hardly all alike, and only thanks to the subordination of much of their individuality and much of their ego to the Army’s success can they do the great good that the American military has done in the world. Indeed, many Chabad rabbis do regard themselves as part of an army — the “Rebbe’s army ■ more

I can’t believe I’m back from 2 weeks of traveling around Europe with my wife. Although I'm constantly traveling helping Chabad houses, this is my first experience traveling as a tourist. I have so much to say and so much to tell, that I decided it would be best to do so with pictures ■ more

"Because he is the most visible Jew in Malmo, with his black fedora, tzitzit and long beard, Malmo’s only rabbi, Shneur Kesselman, 31, is a prime target for Muslim anti-Jewish sentiment. The Orthodox Chabad rabbi said that during his six years in the city, he has been the victim of more than 50 anti-Semitic incidents ■ more

 A "Head" Amongst the Germans
But instead of just surviving, one head rose above the swirl of smoke and fire, to explore more than just our survival - our purpose. After escaping from Berlin the Rebbe moved to Paris and then Vichy and finally Nice and Marseilles from where he escaped war torn Europe ■ more

As the situation is today, the future for Dutch Jewry is moving to Israel. I see myself as a lifeguard, sent here by the Lubavitcher Rebbe, keeping Judaism alive while surrounded by a 70-80 percent assimilation rate ■ more

 Being a Father - and a Son...
There are moments in our lives, in our Jewish experience, when because of our inner struggle or circumstantial experience, we abandon our responsibilities. It may be a responsibility to our community, to our families, or to ourselves - but ultimately it's our responsibility to G-d ■ more

It was exactly 25 years ago this week that I landed at JFK with my 6-year old firstborn.  We rented a car and began our drive via Route 17 to the Rebbe’s camp in Greenfield Park.  I vividly remember how nervous I was – the hesitancy with this entire journey ■ more

It is noteworthy that although the Maharil’s father Reb Boruch was a great Torah scholar, and in fact one of the hidden Tzaddikim, as explained in the writings of the Previous Rebbe, the Maharil did not attribute the greatness of Reb Boruch’s progeny to the scholarship and diligent study of their father, but to the love of Torah and self-sacrifice for Torah exhibited by their mother ■ more

 Overzealous Prosecution Diminished Justice
Photograph: Illustration
The unusually severe sentence of 27 years in prison for Sholom Rubashkin is a victory for a prosecution that pursued, from the outset, a win-at-all-costs strategy. But the success comes at a price, and not just to the 50-year-old man now facing a virtual life sentence, his wife and 10 children. The government’s handling of this case has sullied our justice system ■ more
